Given the names of three characters, it is established that these are cast members for the opera HMS Pinafore by Gilbert and Sullivan.Written on the reverse for each photograph is as follows....Left Photograph:Captain Corcoran [character]W. Wilson,Piasa,Ill.William Wade Hinshaw would become a very well known American light opera star by the late 1890s through the early 1930s. Born to Quaker parents on November 3, 1867, at Union, Hardin County, Iowa, Hinshaw would attend the Northern Indiana Normal School and Business Institute in Valparaiso, Porter County, Indiana, and would serve as the head of the Music Conservatory this school from 1895 to 1899. He would eventually find himself employed by the New York Metropolitan Opera as a baritone singer. He managed several opera companies and would very often play the lead role in the operas in which he performed. Hinshaw also had a great interest in genealogy and published the Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy. Hinshaw passed away in Washington, D.C. on November 27, 1947, and was buried in Rock Creek Cemetery in that city.Thomas Grant Hadley, like Hinshaw, was also born in Hardin County, Iowa, on December 14, 1871. Also like Hinshaw, he would earn a degree in music from the Northern Indiana Normal School and Business Institute in Valparaiso. Hadley would then earn a doctorate degree in music from the Hinshaw Conservatory of Music, and would later serve as a professor of voice for sixteen years at the Millikan Conservatory of Music at Millikan University in Decatur, Macon County, Illinois. He was a well known baritone singer and made appearances with the Chicago and Minneapolis Symphony Orchestras. He died at Decatur on April 27, 1942, and was buried in Decatur's Fairlawn Cemetery.Henry Dickinson Wilson was born August 22, 1866, in Piasa, Macoupin County, Illinois. Wilson was a musician and was a long time faculty member and head of the Department of Music at Louisiana Polytechnic Institute, known today as Louisiana Tech University in Rushton, Lincoln Parish, Louisiana. Wilson also served as the postmaster of Rushton from 1929 to 1933. He died at Rushton on December 9, 1953, and was buried in Rushton's Greenwood Cemetery.Copyright 2025. Some rights reserved.
