説明A very well-preserved and high quality Beerstone chest tomb has been reset during the 19c restoration in a niche to the north of the chancel altar. www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/Kzg22qj261 The chest has a frieze of quatrefoils and on top lies the effigy of an emaciated cadaver partly covered by a shroud tied at the head & feet. It is one of 40 such tombs in the UK dating from 1425 to 1558. There is nothing to indicate who this represented. The church guide suggests Sir William Fry (d. 1427) but some consider the tomb earlier - also perhaps William Malherbe whose family were lords here from c1146 until 1556, and his insignia of a stinging nettle is carved above the window under which he now lies. The tomb would have originally been painted and flecks of blue and red colour still survive. It once stood in the centre of the church viewed from all angles in a place of prominence It would have originally cost £500 at the time (£25000 in today's money) The right hand has a niche below it perhaps indicating that it was holding something. www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/k1d97MSCH4 Also curiously the legs are carved differently , the right knee being larger and the left foot more clenched. In order to elicit prayers, he is shown eyes open suffering in purgatory rather than sleeping www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/858z1ijZ1L - Church of St Andrew, Feniton Devonwww.youtube.com/watch?v=K0xf4SJrXfA
