| 説明 | John Custis IV (1678-1749) was a Virginia colonial planter and politician. John IV enjoys some prominence because his son, Daniel, was the first husband of Martha Dandridge. After Daniel’s death, his widow, Martha Dandridge Custis, married George Washington, who later became the first president of the United States. The inscription on the upper side of the tomb shown here reads, “This Inscription put on this Tomb was by his owne Possitive Order”, and the inscription close to ground reads, “Wm. Coley, Mason in Fenn Church Street, London, Fecit”On the north side of the tomb is inscribed, “Under this Marble Tomb lies ye Body of the HONORABLE JOHN CUSTIS Esqr of the City of Williamsburgh and Parish of Bruton Formerly of Hungars Parish on the Eastern Shore of Virginia and the County of Northampton the Place of His Nativity Aged 71 Years and Yet liv’d but Seven Years which was the space of time He kept a Bachelors house at Arlington on the Eastern Shore of Virginia”Double-click image or type L to enlarge. |
