説明Bicheno. Bicheno was originally known to white people as Waub’s Harbour as a granite island with a narrow channel beside the mainland afforded sheltered harbour for boats. This name was taken from Wauba Debar a local Aboriginal woman who died in 1832. In her teen years she was kidnapped by sealers for a sexual partner and she gained notoriety when she saved two English seamen, one being her “husband” when their boat was smashed against rocks. In 1855 years after her death local white residents raised money for a headstone on her grave which is now heritage listed. In 1893 her body was exhumed for scientists to examine her skeleton. Her remains were returned to the local Aboriginal community in 1990 for reburial. Her grave is in Burgess Street south of Bicheno Primary School. Beside her grave is the Merchant Navy bicentennial memorial erected in 2003. From the earliest days of white settlement the harbour sent corn and wool to the world and brought in goods for the settlers. A coal field was discovered in the 1840s near Waub’s Harbour. Whaling was a commercial venture in this area and after the Americans had gone as English farmers often had a boat or two for chasing whales. The most financially successful year for the whaling was in 1837 although the industry flourished from 1820s into the 1840s. Sometimes up to 200 whales were left lying on the beach decomposing before processing creating an unbelievable stench for the local residents. The whales had been killed off by 1850. The town of Bicheno was named after James Bicheno (1785 – 1851) who was a noted author, botanist, zoologist, and philosopher. In 1842 he went to Van Diemen’s Land as Colonial Secretary for the colony. He was unpopular with some locals for his unwavering support of the governors he served under but he was an efficient administrator. He died in 1851 whilst still in office and his library of 2,500 books was bequeathed to the first Tasmanian Library. Bicheno was named not long after James Bicheno died in Hobart. Although a small gaol house and Courthouse was built here in 1845 (it is owned of the National Trust in Burgess St next to the Primary School) the town emerged once coal was being mined. Coal was discovered in 1848. Then the Lieutenant Governor visited the area to see if a safe harbour was available shortly after Bicheno died. A jetty was built for loading the coal on ships and in 1854 a small horse drawn railway was built from the wharf to the coal mine up the Douglas River valley. It was a mere 5 kms from the mine to the jetty at the Gulch. The granite island across the gulch was named Governor’s Island after the Lieutenant Governor Sir William Denison. The emerging town soon had two hotels for the thirsty miners and a store for supplies. The coal mines were put up for sale in 1855 when mining ceased. The land totalled over 2000 acres was sold in 1859. The town was not officially declared until 1866 when the fishermen were the reason for the town existence. It grew slowly and the first wooden church was not built until December 1882 for the use of both Anglicans and Presbyterians although the Presbyterians owned it. It still stands on the Tasman Highway on the way into the town from Hobart. It is a small town today with a fishing fleet based here. Most visitors go to the Rocking Rock beside the Blowhole at the end of Waub’s Esplanade. From the Waub’s Esplanade you can also see the marina area, with Governor’s Island separated from the coast by a narrow channel of water called the Gulch.
