| 説明 | Built in 1910 and heavily renovated after fires in 1929 and 1934, this Tudor Revival-style building was built to serve as the Gem Theatre, a live performance theater, and later served as a movie theater. The theater remained in operation until 1978, when it closed due to the economic decline of the city of Cairo. The building is characterized by its red brick exterior, terra cotta trim, gothic motifs on the face of the parapet, six-over-one double-hung windows with terra cotta trim, marquee and blade sign mounted to the front facade, and large bays on the first floor, which originally contained shops flanking the theater’s lobby. The building is a contributing structure in the Cairo Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Today, the building, like many of the remaining structures in Downtown Cairo, is abandoned and decaying, with the northeast facade completely overtaken by vegetation. |
