| 説明 | Built in 1949, this Modern International-style building was constructed as a Junior High School annex to the older Washington School, built in 1908, that once stood to the east, and served the Black community of Cairo during segregation as an elementary school and junior high school. The campus had previously housed Sumner Hill High School prior to the construction of a new school at the southwest corner of Poplar Street and 23rd Street in 1927. The building was expanded in 1966-1967 when the original building was finally fully replaced due to desegregation, when Black students were finally admitted to other Cairo public schools that they had been excluded from, and the building became an elementary school, later renamed Bennett Elementary School. The original section of the building comprises the central wing, which features a more textured and decorated exterior than the two additions at either end, with the north wing housing additional classrooms, and the south wing housing a small gymnasium. The building is characterized by its buff brick exterior, orange brick trim, metal-frame windows, rectilinear form, and limestone trim. The building is a noncontributing structure in the Cairo Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The building served as an elementary school until the 2010-2011 school year, when it was closed due to declining enrollment, and has sat abandoned ever since. |
