| 説明 | Pontville. The area here was first explored by white men in 1804. In 1806 one of the soldiers sent to hunt kangaroos for food for starving Hobartians started giving locations exotic names. Pontville was one which sits on the Jordan River which flows through Lake Tiberius and Jericho before it gets to Pontville. To the north of Pontville is Bagdad. It was said the soldier had a copy of the Bible and The Arabian Nights with him. Our stop here is to visit the Romanesque style church of St Marks designed by James Blackburn in 1839 a convict transported to VDL in 1833. He was pardoned in 1841 when the St Mark’s Anglican Church was completed. Convicts would have built the church. The Tuscan style porch is “recessed” by the two adjoining towers. It is heritage listed and one of the most distinctive churches in Australia. It is on the corner of the Brighton Road (C195) and Kimberley St. Pontville has many 1830s houses and shops as it was on Governor Macquarie’s 1811 route from Hobart to Launceston. Pontville was one of the first wheat growing districts of VDL. Bushranger Martin Cash used to roam the country near Pontville. Pontville was established in 1821 as a garrison town with barracks. Local sandstone was used for many buildings including the police station (1839) and the courthouse (1842) and convicts built the stone bridge used by the C195 highway as we go north to St Mark’ Church. As we pass through Pontville you might see on the right before the Jordon River the Catholic Church (1929) and Epsom House on the left (1829) a two storey sandstone residence built for a retired military sergeant James Burnip who had a 10 acre free land grant. He used it as a licensed inn, a blacksmith’s and a residence. It was known as the Blacksmith’s Arms Inn. In 1843 a shop was added and the upstairs ballroom was the early social centre of Pontville and used for hunt season balls, Methodist church services and more. In 1855 an attached Assembly Room was added. It was de-licensed in 1895. |
