説明 | Founded in 1916 as Sieur de Monts National Monument and incorporated as Lafayette National Park in 1919, Acadia National Park was given its present name in 1929, and was created to protect the natural environment of Mount Desert Island, a portion of Isle au Haut, the tip of the Schoodic Peninsula, and sixteen smaller outlying islands. The park is the only National Park in the Northeastern United States, and protects a diverse landscape, ranging from mountains, to forests, to coastline, with lakes, streams, and ponds scattered throughout. The park’s landscape is heavily influenced by repeat glaciation during ice age periods, with exposed bedrock in many areas, as well as a rugged coastline. The park’s boundaries are irregular due to the presence of various settlements on Mount Desert Island, which, while adjacent to the park, remain outside of it. Today, the park attracts approximately 4 million visitors annually, many of whom visit to drive around the park’s loop road. |
