| 説明 | Church of St Michael and All Angels, Farway Devon stands surrounded by farm buildings. It was built in the Norman period, the first record of a rector dating to 1340 but there was a an earlier church here for several centuries before then . The Norman church was enlarged in the 14c, with a west tower added in the 15c. A north aisle was added in 1628 at the expense of Humphrey Hutchins 1628 www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/53y443SP45 who after he is said to have discovered a "miraculous treasure" whilst ploughing a field still known as Money Acre . In 1631 two wealthy farmers, William Pomeroy and John Cox, built `the seate ... in the newe Ile for the use of the parishe'. As Pomeroy's wealth increased he built further pews specifically for his widowed tenants. Members of both these families left small bequests to the local poor and to the repair of the church. The entire church was rebuilt in 1877. However the oldest surviving part is the 12c arcade, with its huge early Norman piers with scalloped capitals. You can see where the original Norman pillars were cut away by masons in the 13c when the rounded arcade arches were replaced by pointed Gothic arches.(The manor of Farway / Fairway, was in ancient times successively in the families of Fleming, Mohun, Osborne, and Devenish. It afterwards passed by purchase to the Earls of Devonshire, and by the Marquis of Exeter's attainder, to the Crown. In Sir William Pole's time it belonged to John Willoughby whose grandfather had purchased it of John Frye, The heiress of Willoughby brought it to the Trevelyans who sold it to Thomas Putt, and later his nephew Rev. Thomas Putt was rector of the parish and built the Farway school. On the south wall is a stained glass window in memory of Rev Thomas Putt who gave his name to the Tom Putt apple variety grown in local orchards. The manor of Netherton, in this parish, was given by Walter de Clavill, to the monastery of Canonlegh. After the 16c Dissolution it was purchased by Piers. The manor was afterwards in the Drakes, and the demesnes in the family of Lowman: both were purchased by Sir Edmund Prideaux d 1628 who built the house at Netherton, which has ever since been the seat of his descendants). In the north aisle is a monument, with a pair of reclining effigies, Sir Edmund Prideaux, 1628 lying above his son Peter Prideaux 1682 www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/s78897GN68In the north chapel is a marble monument to their grandson Sir Peter Prideaux 1705 www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/681Yd9Y44AThere are thought to be many Templar and Freemasonic symbols here including the Rose Cross & the Red Rose www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/8QL8P0D5j9There was a charity-school endowed, in the year 1795, by the Will of Miss Hannah Atkinson, a relative of the vicar, Richard Blake d1732, with 7l. 10s. per annum, for the instruction of 12 poor children, and supplying them with books. www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/28o04D336rIn the churchyard are a pair of old yew trees.
