| 説明 | Built in 1959-1967, this Modern Futurist building was designed by Donald L. Grieb Associates to serve as a plant conservatory for the city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, replacing the previous Milwaukee Conservatory, built in 1898 and closed and demolished in 1955 due to structural deterioration from decades of deferred maintenance. The building is made up of three beehive-shaped glass and steel domes containing botanical gardens, with one dome containing a desert biome, one containing a tropical biome, and one containing a special events space, with a vaulted entrance lobby, a glass nursery dome to the rear, and a series of rear greenhouses utilized for the propagation of plants. The domes remain in use as a botanical conservatory, anchoring Mitchell Park, and are an iconic example of modernist civic architecture. |
