説明88F218 - Towboat "Ashland" in drydock at Jeffboat, Jeffersonville, Indiana, Ohio River mile 602June 1988Twin screw towboat "Ashland" (doc. # 505886, length 150 feet, breadth 44 feet, Alco 16-251C diesels, 5000 hp.) was built in 1966 by St. Louis Shipbuilding, St. Louis, Mo.Originally owned by Ashland Oil, Ashland, Ky., the boat was transferred in 1998 to Marathon Ashland Petroleum, Ashland. In 2005, it was transferred to Marathon Petroleum Co., Findlay, Ohio.In 2010, the boat was sold to Interbarge S.A., Asuncion, Paraguay, and renamed "IB San Lorenzo"."Jeffersonville Boat & Machine Company, known as JeffBoat, was organized in 1938 by American Barge Line, (ABL), utilizing the site once occupied by M. A. Sweeney & Brothers, which had closed in 1920. In 1942, the Navy condemned the neighboring Howard Shipyard & Dock Company, which had closed in 1940, and leased it to JeffBoat for the duration of the war, in which it was a major builder of LSTs, with employment peaking at 13,000. In 1947, ABL bought the Howard portion of the yard from the Navy and formally merged it with JeffBoat, creating what would become the leading inland builder of towboats and barges." (quoted from the Naval Marine Archive)In 2018, Jeffboat closed due to lack of demand for new barges. The property is currently (2025) awaiting redevelopment.
