Meet the Marabou stork or Leptoptilos crumenifer, sometimes referred to as the undertaker bird. Though these birds usually feast on carcasses, the diet of Marabou storks that nest in cities across sub-Saharan Africa mostly consists of what they can forage in urban landfills according to multiple studies. As a result, they often end up picking up plastic. Researchers learned this by analysing what the birds regurgitated.Living in cities also makes Marabou storks vulnerable to urban planning changes. In Nairobi, for example, many of the trees these birds nest in were cut down to make way for an expressway.Still, Marabou storks are listed as ‘Least Concern’ on the list of globally threatened animals. Which means that despite many challenges, these birds have found a way to co-exist with humans. |
