説明Built in 1853, this Romanesque Revival and Italianate-style building was built to house Wheaton College, and was expanded with the addition of towers and wings in 1871, 1873, 1890, and 1927. The building is named for Jonathan Blanchard, the founder of Wheaton College, and originally consisted of a gabled Italianate-style structure, which stands behind the central tower of the present edifice. In 1871, a wing was added to the west of the building, as well as the present central tower, which both express elements of the Italianate and Romanesque Revival styles. In 1873, another wing was added to the east of the 1871 addition, with a more Romanesque Revival-style front facade and a crenellated parapet. The 1890 wing, meanwhile, is located on the east side of the building, and is far more Romanesque Revival in character, lacking the bracketed eaves of the older wings. Finally, the 1927 wing is the easternmost of the building, which balanced the facade and mirrored the 1873 addition, but with simpler detailing and a full fourth floor. The building features a rough-hewn Joliet limestone exterior, with octagonal towers, gabled roofs with bracketed eaves on the 1850s and 1870s portions of the building, arched two-over-two and four-over-four double-hung windows on the older sections of the building, along with small rectilinear windows and oxeye windows on the upper levels of the older wings, corbels and crenellated parapets on the 1873 and 1927 wings, an 1890 wing with roman arched bays on the fourth floor, towers with hipped roofs at the entrances, and a crenellated parapet, and a central tower with a belfry and low-pitch roof. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Today, the building remains in use by Wheaton College, housing administrative offices and the college’s humanities and social sciences departments.
