| 説明 | An ecosystem on a thin branch of a valley oak tree. A: The prominent “oak apples” are old galls from the wasp Andricus queruscalifornicus. These tiny wasp females lay their eggs on the stems of valley oak and closely related species. The larvae trigger a chemical response and the host plant builds the gall. The gall is then their home complete with nourishment. After pupation, the adults emerge by chewing exit holes. The tiny black holes are clearly visible. It gets even more interesting as other predator wasps lay their eggs inside these galls and their larvae feed on the original wasp larvae. It gets even more interesting as other unrelated insects move into these galls to take advantage of the food and shelter. These non-predatory insects are referred to as inquilines.Zoom in on this photo and observe:B: two club galls on the underside of the leaf. The unique shape and location identify this gall former as the wasp species Xanthoteras (updated to Atrusca) clavuloidesC: the cone gall, Andricus (updated to Feron) kingi, directly to the left of the “apple gall” pair.D: the upper leaf has what appears to be a tiny disk gall, species Feron parmula. These four wasps depend on this lineage of our locally native oak trees. While this branch is high in the tree, many of these galls can often be seen at eye-level depending on the tree. The study of plant galls is rapidly advancing and includes many taxon changes for the gall forming insects. We can expect more changes yet to come.
