We are about to pass the Neelgrath Helipad in Sonmarg, which will take pilgrims that much closer to Amarnath. There is still a fair bit of trekking involved even after reaching there by chopper though. We did drive past the helipad but there were no aircraft to be seen as this is only April- May- the Amarnath Yatra (pilgrimage) wasn't until July/ Aug.The Yatra (pilgrimage) to the nearby Amarnath Temple begins in Sonamarg. Amarnath Temple is a Hindu shrine located in the Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir, India. It is a cave situated at an altitude of 3,888 mtr about 168 km from Anantnag city, the district headquarters, 141 km from Srinagar and reached through either Sonamarg or Pahalgam. It is an important shrine in Hinduism. Pilgrims do the treacherous trek every year to see an ice Lingam (Hindu phallic symbol which represents the Hindu god Shiva) which is reputed to be a natural formation. (not man made).
