| 説明 | A good example of a First World War four-gun 12-pounder battery situated on the interior of Scapa Flow. It was decided relatively late in the course of war preparations to use Scapa Flow as the anchorage for the British Grand Fleet, and as a result the sufficient defences were not in place until 1915. Theh small but self-contained battery at Roan Head on the Isle of Flotta in Orkney consists of four open emplacements, each with a square holdfast for mounting a single 12-pounder Quick Firing gun en barbette. A sunken magazine also remains centrally and to the rear of the gun positions.Unlike many of the batteries surrounding Scapa Flow, this example was not rearmed during the Second World War, however a navigation light was added to one of the end emplacements. |
