| 説明 | Small 15c chapel of ease at Culm Davy in the parish of Hemyock in Devon, built of random rubble flint.This was thoroughly restored in 1860 It comprises of a simple undivided rectangular plan withwest bellcote and south porch which has a late 15c archway. . The double bellcote (which is supported internally) is entirely of the 19c as also the 3-light Perpendicular west window, withhood mould and head terminals. The north wall has no windows. The inner doorway of the porch with a 2 centred arch set in square head with foliated spandrels is the best medieval workmanship in the chapel. The east window has been renewed The nave stands under an unceiled wagon roof, some of the medieval ribs surviving ; There is a combined piscina andaumbrey, under trefoil head. A wall monument "of the utmost primitiveness", is to AnneGarvis 1705: www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/25P0j6g0ZqThe estate of Cumbe is listed in the 1086 Domesday Book as one of 27 Devonshire holdings of Theobald FitzBerner, one of the tenants-in-chief in Devon of William the Conqueror. His tenant in turn was Oliver who held 3 of FitzBerner's manors, the others being Widworthy and Marwood.The manor subsequently became a possession of the feudal barony of Great Torrington. The 13c Book of Fees records that the manor was held from the feudal barony by David de Wydworth and was called after him either "Culm Davy" or "Culm Wydeworth".Following the de Widworthy tenure, during the reign of Edward 1 1272 - 1307 , the manor was held by Sir John Wogan and later by Roger Corbet (during the reign of King Edward III) It then passed to John Bourman / Bowerman. and was the seat of his descendants for 7 generations until the time about 1635 after which it was acquired by the Kerslake family (Part of the mediaeval manor house of the Bowerman family survives within the structure of the present Culm Davy farmhouse)Andrew Foster www.google.co.uk/search?q=CULM++DAVY+CHAPEL+DEVON&sca... |
