| 説明 | hind wing revealed I have always wanted to see one of these in real life! This was found dead on the ground inside the compound at St John’s Point Lighthouse, Killough This is the largest moth species found in Ireland. But it is remarkable not just because of its size. It can make a loud noise if it feels threatened. Then there is the distinctive “skull and crossbones” on the back of the thorax is so cool. A perfect species to photograph coming up to Halloween! And as a beekeeper it is so cool to finally see one - These guys refuel on calories by entering beehives and consuming honey! There are various theories on how the moth avoids detection/attack by the bees but it is soething that it manages to do. It can migrate large distances over water. I think it is likely that this guy was attracted to the lighthouse light.Interestingly the larvae feed on potato plants and woody nightshade Solanum dulcamara and are toxic to potential predators due to the build up of poisonous alkaloids from the leaves of these 2 main food plants.photographed at home but geotagged for St John's where it was found. I will record it on CEDaR. ..recorded on CEDaR |
