説明 | Smoky Bay.This pretty little bay was named by Matthew Flinders in 1802 as the bay was covered with hazy smoke, possibly from fires lit by the local Wirangu people. He called it Smoky Bay. Pastoralism was established in the 1860s by Charles Heath who established Wallanippie sheep station. But in 1893 a series of Hundreds were declared along the West Coast. The Hundred of Wallanippie was declared then and Smoky Bay was founded. In 1899 the government built water tanks at Wallanippie to encourage settlers. The brush cutters moved in to clear some of the land around 1905. A government jetty was built so farmers could export their grain in 1913 and a government school opened in 1909. A Post Office opened soon after 1909 with a telegraph station in 1911. The Methodist Church began services and mission work in 1912. When the original church was destroyed in a storm in 1947 a new church was built in 1952 which is now the Community Church. Water was a problem and in 1916 the government built a half acre iron roof to catch rainwater for the tanks. Piped water from the Tod reservoir reached Smoky Bay in 1930. Today Smoky Bay is a holiday area, a town for retirees and for local fishermen and oyster cultivation. It has two oyster processors. Smoky Bay oysters vie with those of Coffin Bay for popularity. It also has sporting facilities, a licensed general store, two caravan parks, a CFS station etc. It has a population of around 200 people. Its official name was only changed from Wallanippie to Smoky Bay in 1940. The nearest school is 45 kms away in Ceduna. |
