Nonetheless, a friend and I visited a series of small dolomite glades on East and West facing slopes amidst deciduous forest. The ground was very dry, and we didn't see much for the first hour. Then, in the woods separating two pocket glades on a Southwest slope, I flipped this young adult ratsnake under a medium sized rock. An ant nest was under one part of the rock and this snake was under the other side. Upon capture it struck often, but sat still readily and was then released after pictures.Maries County, Missouri |
