説明Founded in 1923 as Bryce Canyon National Monument, Bryce Canyon became a National Park in 1928. The park was created to protect Bryce Canyon, which is not actually a canyon, but a series of giant natural amphitheaters on the eastern side of the Paunsaugunt Plateau, part of the Grand Staircase, which prominently feature sedimentary rock pinnacles known as hoodoos, as well as other rock formations, largely formed by frost erosion and stream weathering. The area was historically home to indigenous people, including the Ancestral Puebloans and the Fremont culture, but by the time of European arrival, was home to the Paiute people. The park, however, did not take its name from the indigenous people, but from Ebenezer Bryce, a European-American Mormon Settler who lived on a farm below the plateau. The area was abandoned by Mormon settlers around 1880, after overgrazing, drought, and flooding made farming in the area unviable, which corresponded with the departure of the Paiute from the area, driven out by European-American settlement. The area remained sparsely populated and difficult to access into the early 20th Century, but continued to suffer from overgrazing, logging, and unregulated visitation, which damaged the natural environment within the modern-day park. The increased concern for the preservation of Bryce Canyon led to its designation as a National Monument in 1923.Following the creation of Bryce Canyon National Monument, the plateau saw the construction of roads to overlooks for the various amphitheaters in 1923-1924, while the Bryce Canyon Lodge, a rustic-style building, was built by the Utah Parks Company, a subsidiary of the Union Pacific Railroad, was built in 1924-1926. The road and lodge increased the ease of access to Bryce Canyon, as well as the comfort afforded to visitors, leading to increased visitation to the area. Due to the development of facilities at the park and the increased visitor numbers, the Utah Parks Company assisted with the National Park Service’s land acquisition surrounding the monument, leading to Bryce Canyon being re-designated as a National Park in 1928. The park was further expanded in 1931 and 1942, expanding the park to its present size. The park today is less visited than other parks in Utah, due to its remote location, seeing approximately 2.3 million visitors annually. The park features many hiking trails through the hoodoos and surrounding forests, overlooks from the road atop the plateau, which provide sweeping views of the stone cliffs, hoodoos, arches, and other geologic features, two campgrounds, and a historic lodge and cabins located near the rim of the plateau. Nearby, just outside the park boundaries, the town of Bryce Canyon City, founded by a local hotelier in 1916 and incorporated in 2007, contains additional tourist accommodations and services.
