説明 | Per the National Park Service:Abraham Brian was a free black man who owned and farmed this land on Cemetery Ridge from 1857 to 1869.When the Army of Northern Virginia approached Gettysburg in July 1863, Brain his wife, and five children fled farther north into Pennsylvania to avoid the real possibility of being enslaved by Lee's army, despite his legal status as a free man. After the battle, Brian and his family returned to their land, only to find their house, barn and crops destroyed by the ravages of the 3-day battlefield.Like other farmers in and around Gettysburg, he filed a claim with the Federal government for losses amounting to $1,028 (per one account). He received $15.MG_3590 |
