| 説明 | Keadby Canal Drawbridge, North Lincolnshire, is a unique skew moveable railway bridge. The bridge does not actually swing in the traditionally sense, but slides diagonally on a hydraulic ram system to allow shipping on the Keadby Canal to pass through. Currently due to technical issues (8/24) it is only opening at 10pm at night for 15 minutes, so we were not able to see it in operation this time. A public footpath along the canal also runs over the swing bridge which makes for an interesting life for the Signaller on duty who must stop any trains before releasing the gates. The sliding bridge was constructed for the London & North Eastern Railway in 1925 by Sir William Arrol of Dalmarnock. The structure and much of the mechanism remains original. An interesting feature of the bridge is that it is battery operated. Whilst the bridge is not in use a set of 64 batteries, similar to those used in submarines, are being trickle charged. The bridge is operated using electrical power provided by the batteries. The bridge comprises an open riveted steel framework which is rectangular on plan and which the railway passes over on a skew. In the railway opened position it is supported on the nose abutment, the front wedges and the rear wedges. The main actuators of the bridge are a set of hydraulically driven lifting jacks, two sets of electrically driven wedges and an electrically driven winch haulage drive which operates through an open gearbox with a six foot diameter differential gear. |
