| 説明 | 2003 Transbus (ex-Dennis) Dart SLF chassis with Transbus (ex-Plaxton) Pointer 2 body and Cummins ISBe 3.9 litre 4 cylinder diesel engine of Stagecoach East Kent, Reg, No.KV53EZW and Fleet No.34442, at Margate railway station, 25 July 2024. This might be the oldest bus in normal service currently operating in Kent.Dennis/Transbus/Alexander Dart:- The prototype Dennis Dart was a high-floor, midibus design which appeared in 1988 and was followed by the production of over 12,600 in 1989-2008 for home and abroad of a great many varieties with a plethora of different bodywork. In 2001 Transbus was formed out of Dennis (chassis builders), Alexander (body builders) and Plaxton (body builders) and the Dennis Dart was renamed the Transbus Dart. However, in 2004 Transbus went into receivership and became the subject of a management buy-out which excluded Plaxton, the new company being named Alexander Dennis Ltd (ADL, which later bought back Plaxton). Thus the Dart became the Alexander Dennis Dart until production ceased in 2008.The first generation Dart was originally available only with Duple bodywork, Duple being part of the same Hestair Group as Dennis, but was very soon made available for bodying by others – Wadham Stringer, UVG, Wright, Reeve Burgess (later Plaxton), East Lancs and Alexander. Over 3,400 first generation Darts were built. The second generation Dennis Dart appeared in 1996. The first version was the Dart SLF (Super Low Floor), initially offered with a low floor adaptation of the Plaxton Pointer 1 body; this was replaced by the redesigned Pointer 2 body in 1997. Bodies by other manufacturers were also offered from this time – East Lancs, UVG (later Caetano), Wright, Alexander, Marshall and MCV. In 1997 the Dennis Dart SPD (Super Pointer Dart) was launched, initially only with Plaxton Pointer 2 bodywork but later with bodies from East Lancs, Alexander and Marshall. In 1998 the third variation of the second generation Dart was launched – the Dart MPD (Mini Pointer Dart), initially only with Pointer 2 bodywork but later offered with other types. In addition, in 1998-2003 the Dart (with Alexander ALX 200 bodywork) was produced in the USA by Thomas Built Buses as the Thomas SLF 200, later renamed the Daimler Chrysler SLF 200. Reeve Burgess/Plaxton/Alexander Dennis Pointer:-Reeve Burgess (Plaxton’s subsidiary) launched the Reeve Burgess Pointer 1 in 1991 specifically for the Dennis Dart midibus which had entered service in 1989. The combination was immediately a winner, so much so that Reeve Burgess’s modest Pilsley factory could not ramp up their production sufficiently to cope with demand. Plaxton therefore closed the Pilsley factory in 1991 and shifted production to their own, much larger, factory at Scarborough, eventually rebranding the body Plaxton Pointer 1. Although tailor-made for the Dart, the Pointer 1 was also fitted from 1992 to the Volvo B6 chassis which, though favoured by some bus operators, was never as popular as the Dart/Pointer 1 combination. In 1995, in preparation for the introduction of the Dennis Dart SLF (Super Low Floor), Plaxton facelifted the Pointer 1 to include a low floor. The body was also fitted to the Volvo B6LE chassis and in 1998, for trials purposes, to two Volvo B6BLE chassis. A more thorough low-floor redesign followed in 1997, the Plaxton Pointer 2, for the Dennis Dart SLF. Also introduced in 1997 was the longer body variant, the Super Pointer, for the Dennis SPD (Super Pointer Dart) and in 1998 the Mini Pointer for the Dart MPD (Mini Pointer Dart). In 2003 one body was fitted experimentally to a Blue Bird LFCC9 chassis in the USA. With the formation of Transbus in 2001, the branding was changed to Transbus Pointer 2. Transbus switched production from the Plaxton factory to Alexander’s at Falkirk. However, with the financial collapse of Transbus in 2004, a management buyout retained Alexander and Dennis but not Plaxton, which became independent again. As Plaxton were no longer producing Pointers, that product became the Alexander Dennis Pointer 2 until production ceased in 2006 for the UK and in 2008 for export. |
