| 説明 | The first coin produced by the U.S. Mint, pressed in the presence of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson in 1792, makes a lovely proclamation of one of the earliest depictions of our nation’s self-image: LIBERTY, PARENT OF SCIENCE & INDUSTRY.For Thomas Jefferson, advancing science was a continuation of the American Revolution. In 1789, he wrote to Harvard president Joseph Willard about the latest developments in chemistry, steam power, and bridge designs. He admonished Willard to encourage his students to apply themselves: “We have spent the prime of our lives in procuring them the precious blessing of liberty. Let them spend theirs in showing that it is the great parent of science and of virtue; and that a nation will be great in both always in proportion as it is free.”Personally, I wish we would have kept this motto instead of “In God We Trust.”This copy of the Birch Cent was just sent to me by ASU President Michael Crow. May you carry the torch. |
