| 説明 | c/n F4-0143Built for the West German Luftwaffe as ‘BD+375’, later recoded as ‘BR+375’. It was sold to the Portuguese Air Force in 1966 and became ‘5438’. Retired in April 1990, it was stored at Alverca before being restored and painted in an early camouflage scheme to represent ‘5407’. The original ‘5407’ was destroyed over Guinea on 22nd February 1967 when a 110lb bomb it was carrying prematurely exploded. The pilot, Major Armando Augusto dos Santos Moreira, was also the commander of Esq.121 and he somehow managed to eject from the aircraft safely (good old Martin Baker saves another life!).In July 2002, the ‘new’ 5407 was part of a temporary exhibition at Parc da Nao in Lisbon, but has been in the museum at Sintra since at least 2011. It is seen on display in Hangar 2 ‘African Military Campaigns’.Museo do Ar, Sintra, Portugal.20th September 2022NOTE: - To further ‘muddy the waters’ several sources quote that ‘5438’ is actually c/n F4-0142, not F4-0143. That would make its previous identities BD+374 and BR+374, but the rest of the story still applies! |
