説明Built in 1936-1938, this Art Deco and Stripped Classical Revival-style building was designed by Trowbridge and Livingston with consultation from Francis Keally, and and constructed to serve as the Capitol Building for the State of Oregon, replacing a previous capitol building that was destroyed by fire in 1935. The building is the third structure to serve as the Oregon State Capitol, with previous buildings being built in 1855 and 1876, both of which were more conventional Greek Revival and Classical Revival-style structures. The building was constructed with New Deal-era Public Works Administration (PWA) funds, and was built on the same site as the previous capitol building, though the larger footprint of the present building led to the acquisition and demolition of adjacent homes, with more property being acquired for the construction of additional state office buildings and a linear park the north of the Capitol. The building is clad in white Vermont marble, and features a cylindrical drum atop the center of the building, with a golden Oregon Pioneer statue atop its roof, created by sculptor Ulric Ellerhusen, metal-frame windows, pilasters, a massing that tapers with setbacks towards the roofline, a rectilinear form, and very simple detailings with reliefs of beavers and geometric stone screens being among the few ornamental features on the building’s exterior. To the rear are two office wings added in 1977, which are also clad in white Vermont marble, but are far simpler in their details than the original building. Inside, the building contains chambers for the Oregon State Senate and Oregon House of Representatives, which feature wooden paneling, decorative murals, a rotunda with marble cladding on the floors and lower parts of the walls and murals on walls and the ceiling, the state seal of Oregon in bronze at the center of the rotunda floor, and broad staircases up to corridors that connect to the Senate and House chambers. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. Today, the building remains the seat of government of the State of Oregon, and as of 2023, was undergoing a significant rehabilitation project.
