説明 | Built in 1904-1905, this Classical Revival-style building was designed by Emil Schacht to serve as the city hall of Astoria, Oregon, and was built on the site of a cemetery that dated back to the early 19th Century, when Astoria was home to a fur trading post. The building survived the 1922 Astoria Fire, remaining in use as a city hall until 1939, when the city government moved to the former Astoria Savings Bank Building in Downtown. Following the relocation of the city government, and during World War II, a large armory wing was built to the rear of the building, with the building serving as a USO Club and Armory during this period. The building features a rough-hewn stone base, one-over-one windows, decorative window trim, fluted ionic pilasters, a cornice with modillions and dentils, a hipped roof, a front portico with ionic columns, a rooftop balustrade, metal lampposts, and a cartouche, balconies at the central bays of the second floor of the side facades, and a large stucco-clad rear armory wing with a barrel vaulted roof. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, and is a contributing structure in the Astoria Downtown Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. The building today houses the Clatsop County Heritage Museum and the Clatsop County Historical Society. |
