説明Built in 1898, this Chateauesque-style mansion was designed by Will S. Aldrich for William A. Clark, one of the “copper kings” of Butte, to serve as the residence of his son, Charles Clark, and Charles’s wife, Katherine Clark. The house was the home of the Clarks until 1902, and was sold to Pat Wall, a mining investor, in 1906. The house was owned by Creighton Largey in 1910, before being sold to James A. Murray, another “copper king”, in 1915, whom leased the house to serve as the home of the Butte College of Music from 1917 until 1919. In 1921, following the death of Murray, the house was inherited by his nephew, Senator James E. Murray, whom lived in the house from 1928 until 1945, significantly redecorating the interior during the time that his family lived there. In 1949, the house became the home of the Butte Shriners, and was known as the Fez Club, which operated until 1977. In 1977, the house was sold to the Silver Bow Bicentennial Committee, whom subsequently sold the mansion to the City of Butte to serve as an arts center and museum. The mansion features a hipped roof with exposed rafter tails, a cylindrical corner tower with a conical roof, patterned brickwork, stone trim, double-hung windows, cast iron railings, a projected entrance vestibule, gabled dormers, and a rough-hewn stone base. The interior of the house features decorative woodwork, wood floors, painted murals in the third floor ballroom, decorative ceilings, decorative tile fireplace surrounds, historic light fixtures and plumbing fixtures, and a grand, curving staircase that rises from the first floor to the second and third floors. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, and is a contributing structure in the Butte-Anaconda Historic District, designated a National Historic Landmark in 1961, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966.
