| 説明 | Credit: @InOldNews | Sanshey BiswasTemperatures hit 43 degrees Celsius (109 degrees Fahrenheit) in New Delhi as voters headed to the polls on May 25th, 2024. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow level warning for the region, with many other parts of the country hitting the red level. The weeks-long heatwave in India has become a part of the narrative around elections with candidates from most political parties appealing to voters to go out and vote despite the high temperatures during the Indian General Election of 2024 with over 900 million eligible voters. Some candidates have blamed low voter turnout on the extreme heat. Heatwaves are becoming more frequent across the world as the average global temperatures rise. They’re also lasting much longer. 2023 was declared the hottest year on record, and 2024 may be on track to be even hotter. Every month of 2024 so far has been the hottest month on record compared to previous years. Studies suggest that the human body is not able to function at optimal capacity when outside temperatures are between 40℃ (104F) and 50℃ (122F). When it’s too hot outside, the body’s ability to self-regulate temperature through sweating and vasodilation is less effective. This footage was recorded with support from Internews' Earth Journalism Network and The Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida). |
