| 説明 | The “Star of Kodiak” is an interesting example of adaptive reuse of a ship. It was built starting in July 1945 as the SS Albert M. Boe, the very last of the 2,710 Liberty Ships built for the United States in World War II.Liberty ships were a class of cargo ships built under the Emergency Shipbuilding program. The design was British in concept but adopted by the United States for its simple, low-cost construction. By 1943, a Liberty ship could be built in as little as 39 days. The SS Albert M. Boe was delivered to the War Shipping Department on October 30, 1945 but entered the reserve fleet in 1946. In 1947, it was transferred to the US Army and performed cargo delivery support functions in the Pacific and Korea until it was mothballed in 1954.An earthquake and tsunami hit Kodiak, Alaska on Good Friday, 1964, wiping out most of the city. As part of the effort to restore the town and the fishing industry which was the primary income source, the Albert M. Boe was sold, released from the reserve fleet and converted to be a floating fish processing plant or cannery. The ship was renamed the “Star of Kodiak”.Other ships had been brought to Kodiak in 1964-65 to serve as temporary structures. However, the Star of Kodiak is the only one that remains. The 18 ton propeller has been removed and dirt has been filled in around the ship. Trident Seafoods, the current owner, has added structures to the ship and cut openings for garage doors in the sides to facilitate semi-trailers. The Star of Kodiak is still the heart of this very active cannery and is a permanent addition to Kodiak. The now-landlocked ship is just off the downtown area and is next to the Kodiak visitor center.
