説明 | Built in 1928, this Renaissance Revival-style building was designed by Rapp and Rapp to serve as a vaudeville and movie theater known as the Orpheum Theatre, replacing the Grand Opera House that stood on the site from 1890 until it burned down in 1923. The building was known as the Orpheum Theatre until 1940, when it was sold and became known as the Malco Theatre, and operated as a movie cinema until 1976. The building features a buff brick exterior, terra cotta trim, arched bays over the marquee, a marquee above the front entrance bay, a large blade sign supported by a steel structure on the rooftop, a tall central pavilion flanked by two lower wings on the front wing of the building, a large rear auditorium with metal fire escapes and patterned brickwork, large first floor bays on the front wing with plate glass windows and transoms, and a parapet with a balustrade atop the central pavilion of the front wing. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. In 1977, the building was purchased by the Memphis Development Foundation to preserve the building, and it was reopened as a live performance venue, concert hall, and performing arts theater. The building underwent significant rehabilitations and renovations in 1982, 1996-1997, and 2014, modernizing the systems within the theater, while preserving the building’s significant historic details and features. Today, the building anchors the intersections of Main Street, Front Street, and Beale Street in Memphis, the city’s three most culturally and historically significant corridors. |
