Sonny Fulks, Press Pros Magazine 02 Apr 2014 A week after our profile on Northridge baseball, sentiments pro and con have flowed our way over the Bears, baseball, and perceived insensitivity about how the other have lives!There is a popular idiom used these days by those who simply cut to the chase when it comes to making a point. It is…what it is!Such is my own sentiment relative to those who have written in protest to our feature of last week…those who might have taken offense to our using the term “urban renewal” relative to the remarkable work being done by baseball coaches Phil Kosier and Kirk Persinger at Northridge High School.One actually wrote (without identity), “There are far more important issues relative to urban renewal than kids who have the ‘privilege’ of playing baseball. True urban renewal is about the issues of those who have far less…who lack even a roof over their head and a warm meal. You need to walk in another man’s shoes before you make any statement about urban renewal.”We also heard from a number of Northridge grads and alums, appreciative and complimentary of the article and the work of Kosier and Persinger…those who even shared that once upon a time baseball did matter at NHS, that the program was then alive and well, and winning.But in defense of our statement about this particular form of “renewal”, I will only remind you all of the old adage about an ounce of prevention being worth a pound of cure, years from now when those current Northridge baseball players can look back on the formative experiences of mentorship, competition, success, and accomplishment as a team. And by the way, those are the exact attributes that employers value most when considering prospects for a job…for a career. And a career and a sense of self worth is life’s best antidote for helplessness.And to make the case even stronger, consider what happened to the Polar Bears in their Tuesday game (April 1) against Tri-Village.Down 13-2 in the fourth inning of their game with the Patriots, all of Phil Kosier and Kirk Persinger’s words about competitive zeal and teamwork appeared to be as effectual as yesterday’s batting practice…a distant memory. But a comeback, a “renewal” of spirit and motivation, sometimes comes by strange genesis. All it takes is a spark.A Brandon Phillips-like defensive play by second baseman Jeremiah Silvey was the spark. It led to optimism, base hits, runs, and a resurgent comeback…2 runs in the fourth, 2 more in the fifth, and 6 in the bottom of the sixth.More, the game ended in the top of the seventh on the most unlikely of double plays…a fly ball to center field and a throw to the plate to cut down the would-be tying run by Tri-Village. Northridge had won, 14-13, a remarkable accomplishment and attributable to the benefits of what? Northing more than mentorship, competitive zeal, success, and accomplishment as a team!Obstacles can be overcome. There is no deficit too large when you have the tincture of time…another life, another out, another inning.Imagine the impact of this life lesson about “renewal” on Silvey, teammates Tyler Venters, Jordan Dull and A.J. Jackson.Imagine the impact on parents and onlookers who watched…on teachers and other students upon hearing the outcome on Wednesday morning. Obstacles can be overcome. There is no deficit too large when you have the tincture of time.Such is the value of “image” renewal through baseball, where the life obstacles are all too visual within the short north community of North Dixie Drive. Memories of being down, but coming back. It’s never too late when you have a life, another out, another inning.Those “life lessons” we wrote about last week, being taught by Phil Kosier and Kirk Persinger.The ounce of prevention that makes any kind of renewal…work |
