| 説明 | (Video)- An ongoing private religious function in the Sri Mariamman Hindu temple in Singapore Chinatown. The continuous tom tom tom of the drums is generally played at weddings at the auspicious moment when the groom ties the sacred thread of matrimony around his bride’s neck- I could not spot a bride and groom pair here, so it must be some other equally auspicious event. l am not particularly religious, but the ceremony was interesting to watch and that tom tom tom of the drum sounded reassuringly auspicious. The Sri Mariamman Temple in Singapore Chinatown is Singapore's oldest Hindu temple. Built in typical Dravidian style, the temple has been gazetted a National Monument due to it's architecture and historical importance and is a major tourist attraction, apart from being an important place of worship for Singapore's south Indian Tamil population. The Sri Mariamman Temple was founded in 1827, eight years after the East India Company established a trading settlement in Singapore. (Singapore, Sept. 2023) |
