| 説明 | Back in September 2020 I gathered a bag full of Alexanders' seeds from the footpath by the river at Orford, Suffolk. Some I grew in seed trays, and transplanted them to our wild flower patch at Exhall. Some I just scattered there as seeds. If I can establish them here they will spread readily and provide us with a cheerful burst of yellow in the early spring. I do know that once they are established they will stay for ever. They do not grow around here at the moment. I wanted to see if I could alter that - and it looks like I might be doing just that!Smyrnium olusatrum, common name Alexanders is an edible flowering plant of the family Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), which grows on waste ground and in hedges around the Mediterranean and Atlantic coastal regions of Europe. It was formerly widely grown as a pot herb, but is now appreciated mostly by foragers.Alexanders is often described as being native to the Mediterranean and only introduced further north. The earliest find of alexanders in Britain is a seed found at a Roman site at Caerwent. It is commonly said to have been introduced by the Romans. In Britain, the first record of alexanders as a living plant was in 1562. |
