| 説明 | This was the view that faced me back around 1980-ish when some friends convinced me to go climb Mt Egmont with them. At 2518 meters or about 8250 feet, it's the second highest mountain on the North Island. Although there is a well-established track to the top on the other side, this way is definitely a long slog over rocks and scoria, once you reach the steeper slopes. On the day we chose, there wasn't anywhere near this much snow, so the ascent was mostly over loose volcanic stones called scoria that had you taking a step up and sliding back half of it. We did make it though and inset is a photo of a very young me, close to the summit. The journey back down included a series of long slides down the scoria that made the descent much, much quicker than going up! |
