| 説明 | A final look at the ruins of St. Paul's church atop Bukit Melaka (previously St. Paul's Hill) in the historic district of the UNESCO World Heritage listed town of Malacca/ Melaka. This scene reminded me of the Bassein (Vasai) fort near Bombay (Mumbai) in India, parts of which are very similar in appearance. Back to this picture, I was lucky that as I was leaving, the crowds had just started started pouring in- photography would have been pretty inconvenient had the crowds come in before. Note the old gravestones stood up against the walls of the church These grave stones were probably once laid into the floor of the church, but the floor has now been paved with regular floor tiles. (a wise/ diplomatic move, considering the large number of visiting European tourists?). Built by a Portuguese captain, Duarte Coelho, St. Paul's church is considered the oldest Catholic church in Malaysia, though not much of it remains though, as you can see here. (Malacca/ Melaka, Malaysia, Sept. 2023) (NOTE: Apologies for the small image size- thanks to the harsh sunlight, I did not realize that the LIVE mode has got activated on my iPhone. Thanks to this mode, this picture had got recorded as a mini one second movie. I therefore had to delete the original live image and satisfy myself with this screenshot of that moving image, hence the small size of this picture.) |
