| 説明 | The clock tower on Dutch Square in the UNESCO World Heritage listed town of Malacca/ Melaka in Malaysia. And as with most heritage buildings, this simple structure looks more beautiful by night as well. Note Christ Church Melaka in the left background and the Stadthuys museum behind the clock tower. The Queen Victoria fountain is right next to this clock tower. (just out of the picture). The Malacca/ Melaka clock tower stands 50-feet tall and has been an important landmark on Dutch Square for 134 years now. Also known as the Tan Beng Swee Clock Tower, the tower was named after Tan Beng Swee, a wealthy businessman and leader of the Chinese community in Melaka and Singapore. The clock tower was built by Tan Beng Swee’s son, Tan Jiak Kim to honour his late father after he (the father)'s death in 1884. Don't know how true this is, but it is said that the tower was constructed in Britain in 1886 and then delivered to Melaka. The clock on the tower is still kept in working order to this day while the bell faithfully tolls every hour. (Malacca/ Melaka, Malaysia, Sept. 2023) |
