| 説明 | Signpost next to a steep set of stairs adjoining the Stadthuys building on Dutch Square in the UNESCO World Heritage listed city of Malacca/ Melaka, Malaysia. You can go in, go around or climb up Bukit Melaka hill (previously St. Paul's Hill) at Stadthuys. Of course, the climb up the steps to the top of Bukit Melaka is pretty steep from here- it's a much easier climb if you go round the building and climb up the decidedly less steep steps if you go through the A Famosa fort gate. (see subsequent pictures later in this album). Stadthuys was built between 1641 and 1660 on the ruins of a fort which belonged to the Portuguese, not much of which remains now. (see subsequent photos later in this album). Now turned into a history and ethnography museum, Stadthuys initially served as an administrative centre of the Dutch administration for over 300 years. Parts of the building were also used as residences for Dutch governors and officers. (Malacca/ Melaka, Malaysia, Sept. 2023) |
