| 説明 | A Cassowary at the far end of it's enclosure in the Malacca/ Melaka zoo. Cassowaries are large, flightless birds native to the tropical forests of New Guinea (Papua New Guinea and West Papua), the Aru Islands (Maluku), and northeastern Australia.. Around 90% of the Cassowary diet consists of fruit. However all Cassowary species are opportunistic omnivores, and also take a range of other plant and animal foods as well. These include shoots and grass seeds, fungi, invertebrates, eggs, carrion, fish, and small vertebrates like rodents, small birds, frogs, lizards, and snakes. Cassowaries are the most omnivorous and are therefore considered to be the largest omnivorous bird where meat makes up but a tiny part of their diet. Cassowaries have three-toed feet with sharp claws. The inner (first) toe has a dagger-like claw which may be 125 mm (5 in) long. This claw is particularly dangerous, as Cassowaries sometimes kick humans and other animals with their powerful legs- that claw is capable of dismembering the victim- which may include humans, if provoked. Cassowaries can run at up to 50 kmph through dense forest and can jump up to 1.5 mtr high. They are good swimmers, crossing wide rivers and even swimming in the sea, when required. Notes about the Malacca/ Melaka zoo appeared earlier in this album. (see previous pictures). (Malacca/ Melaka, Malaysia, Sept. 2023) |
