It was built between 1945 and 1986 and stands 74.5m high. It was designed by architect Guðjón Samúelsson.The statue represents Leif Erickson, son of Erik the Red. He was the first European to discover continental North America around the year 1000.It is a work by the American sculptor Alexander Stirling Calder.
