| 説明 | Portal of the Madrasa (c. 1721) in Athens, Greece. In the early 18th century, the Ottomans built a religious school (Medrese/Madrasa) near the ancient Tower of the Winds. The rectangular building consisted of rooms arranged around a central courtyard with a small mosque in the northeastern corner. After the Greek War of Indepedence, the newly formed Kingdom of Greece rebuilt the the Madrasa in 1834 for use as a prison. As such, the building was used throughout the 19th century, gaining a rather imfamous reputation as a site of executions. After the prison was closed, much of the structure was demolished during archeological excavations with only the gate remaining today, still bearing its Ottoman decorations. |
