| 説明 | A view of the Hertel Parkside Branch of M&T Bank - located at 1580 Hertel Avenue in Buffalo, New York, at its northeast corner with Parkside Avenue - on a rainy afternoon in January 2023. Built in 1923, this handsome two-story brick and stone edifice is a fine example of the Neoclassical architectural style as typically applied to bank buildings in the era: the flat roof and curved corner presage the Deco and Moderne aesthetics that would soon take the architectural world by storm, yet traditionalist touches still abound, especially in the light-colored dressed-stone detailing: ancones serve as ersatz cornerstones above the expansive second-story windows, and a modestly projecting cornice undergirds the brick parapet. The building was constructed for the Fidelity Trust Company but became an M&T branch only two years later, after the merger of the two companies. |
