説明By Mike MooneyArea III FMWR MarketingHUMPHREYS GARRISON – Private First Class Derrick Hannah went to the Super Gym New Year’s Day to play a little basketball and, hopefully, help his team to a pre-season tournament championship in the Holiday Basketball Tournament.By the end of the day, the Soldier from Alpha Company, 719th Military Intelligence Battalion, had a first-place trophy and a round-trip airline ticket to anywhere in the United States as winner of the seventh annual Fly-Away Home Shootout. The shootout is a New Year’s tradition here, with an active duty Soldier winning the airline ticket from Area III Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation and U.S. Airline Alliance, the official Army contractor for both leisure and official travel, here, who has donated the ticket each of the seven years of the event.“This is a great event that guarantees a Soldier a great New Year,” said Command Sgt. Major Jason K. Kim, the Area III and Humphreys Garrison command sergeant major, who drew the numbers and awarded the prizes. “It adds something special to New Year’s Day.”The shootout is a combination of skill and luck. Everyone who enters the Super Gym before noon receives a door prize ticket, and 10 numbers are drawn for shootout participants.Individuals start the shootout from the free throw line, where they have four chances to make a basket and move onto the next round. The second shot is from the three-point line, followed by one from half court and then, if they’ve made it that far, the Shootout Money Shot comes from three-quarters court.Participants get four chances from the free throw line, three from the three-point line, two from half court and one shot from three-quarters court. Prizes are also awarded for each successful shot.Nine of 10 candidates advanced to the three-point line, winning an Area III FMWR hat. Five of the nine who advanced beyond the first round made the three-pointer and won a travel mug. None of the five made the half-court shot for the chance at the Money Shot.“But, we promised that we were going to give away an airline ticket, and that’s what we did,” said Lonnie Herring, Area III sports director. “All the prizes that haven’t been won are up for grabs. This year, that was one hat, five travel mugs, two Area III FMWR Value Books (worth more than $1,000 each) and the airline ticket.”Door prize tickets from the 10 participants were put back in the hat, and prizes were drawn in turn. Following the awarding of the Value Books, all tickets were once again put back in the box and the airline ticket drawing took place.“This is a great New Year’s gift,” said Hannah, “and, I never dreamed it was possible. I have been in Korea since August, and I’ll use this ticket to go back home to Atlanta for a visit.”Kim added, “It’s great to see a young Soldier win the ticket. This is the second year in a row that our winner has been a Private. I love it.”Photo by Jeff HubbardFor more information on U.S. Army Garrison Humphreys and living and working in Korea visit: USAG-Humphreys' official web site or check out our online videos.
