説明 By late 13c the church was in a poor state of repair - the chancel was ‘parvum, inhonestum, male fenestratum et male co-opertum ( small, dishonorable, badly windowed and badly roofed) in 1281 and 1301 when funds were found to reroof, renovate, rebulld and extend. The present nave with chancel under a continuous roof & south transept belong to this time - To the right is the entrance to the late 13c / early south transept known as the Horwell Aisle was built as a chantry by Sir Walter de BatheBelow the south window 2 recesses with graceful ogee-arched canopies doubtless surmounted tombs of the Bathe family. The floor was raised in 19c and the right recess includes a badly defaced grave slab in memory of Elizabeth Poyntingdon of Pennicott 1627 There are two hagioscopes in the church, one to secure a view of the altar in the south aisle from the nave, and the other that the high altar may be seen from the south transept Chapel. The east window, dating from c1300, was erected probably in commemoration of Archdeacon Sawbridge, Canon of Exeter, and afterwards Bishop of Winchester. Outside the window are two angels supporting shields bearing the arms of Exeter and Winchester. The north Copplestone aisle and chapel followed c 1460 built as a private family chantry c1460 by Philip and Walter Coplestone as executors of the will of their father John, who with his wife Elizabeth was buried in the aisle. www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/b708U6BKnZ In the chancel is a very fine altar and reredos of 1896 by Harry Hems and the gift of Francis Synge Silliphant of Combe House. Built of oak in Gothic style the reredos features a marble relief representation of the Descent of the Holy Ghost at Pentecost Silliphant family and their friends. It is flanked by the figures of St Andrew and John the Baptist. devonchurchland.co.uk/galleries/colebrooke-church-of-st-a... The 19c oak altar rail is supported on reused 18c turned balusters. The oak choir stalls are late 19c The nave, aisle and chancel have ceiled wagon roofs. The nave roof is late 15c / early 16c . The plaster ceiling is laid on oak lathes and is probably original. The chancel roof may contain15c / early 16c carpentry but has been heavily restored with 19c oak panels, good carved bosses and embattled wall plate. The capital between nave and chancel includes and Coplestone arms and the wall above is pierced for the rood gallery (nave screen removed in 1805). The chapel screen across the north aisle and the parclose do survive. Some of the benches and most of the bench ends are probably late 15c / early 16c The floors throughout the church have been replaced with 19c tiles and in places levels have been altered. - Church of St Andrew, Colebrooke Devonescapetobritain.com/colebrooke-church/?unapproved=998&amp...
