説明 | Built in 1925-1927, this Byzantine Revival-style building was designed by Florestano Di Fausto to serve as the Grande Albergo delle Rose Hotel and Casino, and was originally a more ornate structure with Arabic and Venetian Gothic elements, which opened as a hotel in 1927 and a casino in 1929. In 1936, the building was renovated under the direction of a new Italian Colonial governor, who disliked the ornate architecture favored by his predecessor, leading to the building attaining its present appearance. The building operated as a hotel until World War II, and after the island became part of Greece in 1947, the hotel operated into the 1970s. The building features a stucco-clad exterior with casement windows, roman arched bays, a simple, rectilinear, and boxy form, a domed tower with arched wall dormers, loggias facing the ocean with arched openings, a simple, modernist canopy at the main entrance, an Art Deco-style outbuilding with curved balconies and a breezeway at the center of the first floor, and both rectilinear and curved balconies at the upper floors of the exterior facade. The building was renovated between 1999 and 2002, and today, operates as Casino Rodos, an upscale resort hotel and casino. |
