説明 | Built in 444-440 BC, this Classical temple was dedicated to the Greek god Poseidon, and was built on the same site as an earlier temple. The temple was built by the City-State of Athens, under the leadership of Pericles, and was placed on a large promontory surrounded by cliffs, standing high above the Mediterranean sea, next to shipping lanes that led to and from Athens. The temple was constructed of marble with an exterior doric portico with fluted doric columns, some of which remain standing, an entablature, which remains partially intact, a gabled roof with pediments, of which little remains, and a central enclosed section, which has mostly vanished. The temple complex was excavated in 1884, and again between 1897 and 1915, revealing the remains of the previous temple, the peribolos, enclosing wall, stoas, and propylaea, which stand around the remaining colonnades of the temple, and the grounds, today, are open to visitors. |
