説明Victoria Ave corner Rutland. Opit House. A stone single storey villa house was built on this corner allotment in 1897 or 1989. This was purchased by William Hudd in 1922 the son of Herbert Hudd who established a chocolate and confectionary company in Adelaide which was eventually taken over by Allen & Co sweet manufacturers in 1923. This villa is visible in Rutland Street. However the front garden of this residence was subdivided and a new residence was built in 1940 directly in front of it. The Victoria Avenue house was built in cream brick in belated Art Deco style. The two storey house is noted for its stepped chimney on the façade of the house, the steel pedestrian gate with carved lines, and steel famed windows which were very avant guard at that time. A parapet hides the roof line and the house has curved corner walls, concrete window hoods and tiled window sills. It did have curved glass bricks for the staircase but this has been replaced with a glass window now. Does this house belong in Victoria Avenue or is it an Art Deco anomaly? The architect for this modern house was Ernest Keal and the house was built for Dr Leon Opit. Dr Opit was born in 1900 and died in this house in 1948. He graduated in medicine from the University of Sydney. He was at times president, treasurer and trustee of Jewish Synagogue in Adelaide. In his later years he was a heart specialist. He was buried in the Jewish section of West terrace cemetery.
