説明 | Built in 1929-1930, this Art Deco and Stripped Classical Revival-style building was designed by James A. Wetmore to serve as a United States Courthouse and Post Office for the city of Asheville, North Carolina. The building features a limestone-clad exterior with two-over-two double-hung windows, a hipped metal roof, decorative trim surrounds at the entrance doors, a front portico with three rectilinear openings and stone pillars, decorative carved sculptural reliefs over the portico openings, stone balconies at the second floor bays in the portico, decorative metal screens at the transoms above the front entrance door, front steps flanked by light fixtures, metal spandrel panels between the first and second floor windows, and buff brick cladding on the rear around the perimeter of the light well. To the south, a Postmodern-style annex stands along Patton Avenue, which houses additional offices and courtrooms. The building is a contributing structure in the Downtown Asheville Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, and adjusted to its present size in 2011. The building today is known as the Veach-Baley Federal Building and United States Courthouse. |
