説明Church of St George, Clyst St George, Devon hides behind giant yew trees that surround the graveyard Known as Clisewic in the 1086 Domesday Book it was one of 58 manors granted to Ralph de Pomerai by William the Conqueror; and held in the 13c by the Plantagenet Earls of CornwallThe original ancient church was begun at least by the 13c, the earliest recorded rectors being David (persona de Clistune) & John Brintot in 1230. The tower was added in early to mid-15c, in 1757 the fabric was repaired and decorated, however the nave etc was almost entirely rebuilt 1854 - 55 by Rev. Henry Thomas Ellacombe - The church was restored and reseated with open benches with finely-carved ends: Later in 1888, a new vestry on the north side of the chancel was added, the organ enlarged and oak choir stalls and corridor to the pulpit erected at a cost of £500: the interior walls were decorated with the “Stations of the Cross” in relief: the pulpit, inlaid with mosaic, was the gift of Samuel Parr esq. of Knowle, in 1852 two parclose screens had been erected from designs by Mr. R. Medley Fulford, architect: the carved oak reredos, with its painted panels, was executed as well as the screens, by Hems, of Exeter, and together with the communion table was given by the parishioners as a memorial to the Rev. Ellacombe : all the windows were stained, and one of these displayed the arms of John Wynard, who, with Isabella his wife, erected the old east window: Mosaics of angels with widespread wings supporting scrolls of Scripture were on the western wall placed by Salviati between September 1862 and October 1863 All this in turn was reduced to ruins by an incendiary bomb in 1940 when scores of these were dropped on the village on the night of August 31st 1940 destroying several houses and the rectory stables. One dropped inside the organ setting fire to the church which was completely burnt out www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/5xd989zn23The present church, not a copy of Ellacombe's work, was rebuilt (all but the tower) & completed in 1952. It consists of a nave, north aisle, chancel, south-east vestry , south porch & two stage west tower which has a slim profile characteristic of many churches in the Exeter area, A south-east polygonal stair turret rises over its renewed battlements. Surviving from the 1940s ashes are a brass figure of Julian Osborne 1614 www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/7F1F49814S ( A marble bust of possibly her husband Richard Osborne in wig & cravat has disappeared ) & an elaborated wall memorial erected by George Gibbs in 1708 in memory of his father & grandfather www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/ja93vHf6F4Picture with thanks - copyright Robin Drayton CCL www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1309379
